KTM-Lukla (2,840 m) – Phakding (2,610 m). In the morning, we’ll head to the airport for a scenic flight to the unforgettable Lukla airport. If the weather allows, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Himalayas. We’ll meet our team of porters and guides. Then we’ll hike to Phakding, a relatively easy 3-hour walk. Free afternoon and overnight in a lodge.
Phakding – Namche Bazaar (3,340 m). Today is a long day (6 to 7 hours of hiking), reaching 3,500 meters of altitude in Namche Bazaar, the capital of the Khumbu Valley. The trail is comfortable, passing through many Sherpa villages. We’ll cross stunning suspension bridges and begin the ascent to Namche. Though the terrain is easy, the steep incline makes it important to keep a steady pace for acclimatization. With good weather, we’ll get our first view of Everest. As part of our acclimatization plan, we’ll stay two nights in Namche.
Acclimatization day in Namche. Today is a free day to get used to the altitude. Namche is full of handicraft and mountain gear shops to explore, as well as many cafés and restaurants to relax in.
Namche Bazaar – Thiangbotse (3,860 m). We’ll begin the day walking on a flat trail until we reach the chorten dedicated to Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary, from where we’ll get a stunning view of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. We’ll descend steeply to Phunki Tenga, where we’ll have lunch after crossing the Imja Khola river. After lunch, we’ll start the climb to Thiangbotse, a steady 2–3 hour walk on good trails. Thiangbotse is incredible; we’ll enjoy taking photos and admiring Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Khumbila, Thamserku, and Kangtega. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit one of Nepal’s most important Buddhist monasteries, located in this spectacular high-altitude setting.
Thiangbotse – Dingbotse (4,400 m). The day begins with a one-hour descent through beautiful forests to the Imja Khola riverbed, which we’ll cross again. From there, the vegetation thins out and transitions to alpine shrubs. We’ll have lunch at 4,000 meters, then continue across the plains of Orsho with closer views of Ama Dablam and Lhotse. We’ll also see Pumori in the distance. Total hiking time is 6–7 hours.
Short hikes and rest to adjust to altitude.
Dingbotse – Lobuche (4,910 m). Sunrise in Dingbotse is magical. A short 20-minute climb gives us spectacular views of Ama Dablam, Island Peak, Baruntse, and Makalu. We’ll hike alongside Cholatse and Taboche, two beautiful 6,300-meter peaks. Lobuche is located alongside the Khumbu Glacier, and it’s common to feel the altitude here. Expect a colder night.
Lobuche – Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) – Gorakshep. We finally reach the base camp of the highest mountain on Earth. After exploring this magical place and taking photos of Khumbu Icefall and Everest, we’ll return to Gorakshep to rest.
Kalapattar (5,577 m). Today we’ll wake up early to reach the summit of this incredible viewpoint at sunrise. It’s a 500-meter elevation gain with no technical difficulty. The views from the top are astonishing: Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Khumbu Glacier, base camp, and the icefall right beneath us. We’ll then return to Periche to spend the night (optional helicopter descent available).
